Wiki Started on the PD day 31st May 2007 by Priscilla and Mary.
The aim of the PD day is:
1. To share what each school is doing in the way of ICT, thinking skills and differentiation.
2. To share issues and solutions.
3. To create an overview here of the resources we currently use.
4. Set up favourite weblinks on http://del.icio.us/clearlinks/Mathematics
What we shared is:
1. To share what each school is doing in the way of ICT.
Glendowie College has fixed data projectors and uses them daily. Sacred Heart does not have this luxury at the moment. Both schools use ICT to plan lessons, write schemes, and provide website information for students. Both schools have issues gaining access to the computer labs. Thinking skills are covered with problem solving. Differentiation: Both Priscilla and Mary have year 9 students sitting NCEA level one, and really enjoy teaching gifted mathematicians. The web has such a lot of resources for these students.
2. To share issues and solutions.
Sacred Heart maths teachers are waiting for the technology promised. Mary looks forward to using a data projector on a daily basis. We both have concerns about differentiation in the classroom. An extreme variation of prior mathematical knowledge in the same classroom causes stress for students and teachers. We agreed that when classes are streamed differentiation is far more effective.
Summary
issue: lack of data projectors; Solution: they are coming soon. issue: effective teaching of all students; Solution: Request students are streamed for maths.
3. To create an overview here of the resources we currently use.
There is no shortage of resources, it really is up to each teacher to spend time looking at the wealth of information, games and resources freely available on the internet. Mary and Priscilla think global, there are many countries that provide free resources for teachers.
Summary of our time together: Priscilla: I got a lot out of it. I have several lesson ideas to pass on to the staff at glendowie. I will be using the problems with all my classes as soon as I can. It is great to talk about what we each use. There is so much out there that finding the best stuff is hard on ones own. I will be updating my site http://mathlinks.co.nz/ as soon as I have the software and time to do so.
Mary: I also enjoyed sharing favourite lessons and setting up all my links.
We have also learnt we can use this wiki to share and store powerpoints, lesson plans and even scheme development documents. We plan to do this in the future.
We discussed the strategy for linear equation solving and decided that it works for simple examples but falls down for more complex equations involving algebraic fractions.
5th July 2007. Priscilla has been working on Year 9 and 10 Schemes that are based on e-learning, the new curriculum and higher order thinking, problem solving and investigative learning.
Wiki Update August 2011 http://geogebraart.wikispaces.com is Priscilla's latest Wiki
Wiki Update August 2009 http://geoart.wikispaces.com/ is Priscilla's Wiki

Software used at Glendowie is as follows:Geometers Sketchpad details at //http://www.dynamicgeometry.com///
Free Geogebra details at //http://www.geogebra.org/cms/// and //http://www.geogebra.org/en/wiki/index.php/English//
Download at //http://www.geogebra.org/download/install.htm//
In the ICT lab we have StudyBudy
Mindspring is our school intranet that also has online self marking homework.
Starters: a really valuable, accessible and interactive resource
http://www.transum.org/Software/SW/Starter_of_the_day/index.htm
Both schools:
Wordfinds and worksheets are generated by online worksheet generators.
Mathsweek http://www.cosmicangst.co.nz/mw07/ and Census http://www.censusatschool.org.nz/ are great resources.

A favourite of Priscilla's (used every year without fail) is the UFO race. You need to download the programme free from

and this follows along nicely http://www.stat.sc.edu/~west/javahtml/CLT.html
Bright Sparks Frog Jumping is another must do lesson on algebra patterning.

A favourite of Mary's is:

Santa's Sack, Hare and the tortuse and spinners. All really neat. Priscilla says thank you Mary.
Mary prints out logic problems from Math Mystries and GCSE site.
